2002 His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew
Through his pioneering efforts, linking faith to the environment, His All Holiness has managed to raise the environmental awareness of 300 million faithful of the Orthodox Church worldwide and challenges other religious leaders to do the same. The Patriarch was also granted the Prize for his tireless efforts to bring attention to both rights and obligations, criticising both the over consumption in the first world countries and the lack of justice that causes growing inequity in developing nations.
